directions for creating online modules
Hello teachers-in-training!
For this activity, you will create an online module that consists of videos, animations, written directions, and worksheets related to your assigned body system. The respiratory system online module is your example. Yours should look very similar to this format.
FORMAT: Each student is assigned a different topic and will create his/her own separate module. Though you should go through the videos/animations you are putting on your module, you do not need to write any notes at this time. You will be completing the activities along with your classmates on your assigned day.
END GOALS: You need to create a module so that after completing all the activities, students have read, listened, seen, and recorded all the major organs and their functions associated with your body system. The entire module should take ~60 minutes.
GRADING: This will count as a major project grade for Term 4, roughly the weight of three labs. All this material will be on the body systems exam in a few weeks, so it is important that you take the time to educate your classmates and help prepare them.
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1: Create a new google doc. Title it "Your body system by your name" so mine would be "Respiratory System by Ms. Gately."
This should be typed into the upper left corner where it originally says "untitled document." You should also put this title as the top of the document itself, in the body of the text.
Step 2: Share your document with me. Click the blue button that says share and send it to my email: bgately@bostonpublicschools.org --> (copy (CTRL + C) and paste (CTRL + V) if needed so you do not mis-type)
Step 3: Go on youtube and type in your assigned body system. There will be many video options and you need to go through all of them until you find a good one. Remember your video should be between 3 and 8 minutes long and be age-appropriate. It should not be meant for elementary school and it should not be meant for college professors. Find a video that has lots of good and relevant information.
Step 4: Copy and paste the link from your chosen video into your google doc.
Step 5: Once you have a great video, go to www.edpuzzle.com. Go through the tutorial they provide. Watch and listen carefully so you learn how to make an EDpuzzle video of your own.
Step 6: Because you are teaching your classmates, you are going to click the button that says "Teacher, start now" and make a teacher account. Put in your name and email, and USE YOUR EDPUZZLE PASSWORD for your password.
Step 7: Create an EDpuzzle video using your chosen youtube video. You just have to click "Create" and then copy and paste the link from youtube. From there you can crop the length (should be 3-8 minutes long), add in multiple choice questions and add in notes to tell your students what information to write down. Your video should be formatted just like the class videos. You should have at least 3 multiple choice questions to check for understanding, and every vocab word should have a note with a star (*) along with the definition. Any other notes you want them to write down should be in there as well, with a star *
Step 7: Publish your video. (You can ask Ms. Gately for assistance with this). You should then copy and paste the shareable link into your Google doc.
Step 8: Find an online animation or lab. Search the web for online animations or online labs associated with your body system. It should be interactive and help students learn the material, and should relate to your worksheets (see below).
Copy and paste any links into your google doc. You may use multiple activities or animations to help students learn the content.
Step 9: Find or create TWO worksheets.
a) The first worksheet should be a labeled diagram that your students must fill in. You can easily google this. Find an image or webpage that will help your students fill out the labels. Copy and paste the link into Google doc and label it.
b) The second worksheet needs to be related to the functions of your organ system. You may type your own worksheet (just open another google doc) so that it goes along with an online video, animation, or lab. You may also find one from online, but make sure your students have the resources to answer it. Your online activity and worksheet should relate so that one helps complete the other. Copy and paste any links into your google doc.
Step 10: Write your online module directions in your google doc, with the links inserted in the appropriate places. It should read exactly how you want it copy and pasted onto the website. Have Ms. Gately check it over and give you feedback. Make sure your key matches the example on the website.
HELPFUL GOOGLE HINTS:
(All examples are used with the circulatory system, but just substitute in your system)
- youtube video help: just type the name of your system into youtube- there will be tons of resources
- online animation help: type "circulatory system online lab" or "circulatory system online animation" or "circulatory system online interactive" or "circulatory system hands on activity" and search through all the resources
- labeled diagram help: type "circulatory system labeled diagram" into images
- worksheet help: type "circulatory worksheet" or "circulatory system functions worksheet" you can always add "pdf" to the end of your searches if you want fully pre-made documents (but remember you cannot edit those)
ARE YOU DONE???
Checklist:
____EDpuzzle complete and link pasted in Google doc
____Online interactive/lab found, practiced, pasted link in Google doc, and relates to content
____Paper worksheet 1: Labeled diagram created & sent to Ms. Gately (also in Google doc)
____Paper worksheet 2: Functions created & sent to Ms. Gately (also in Google doc)
____Google Doc is formatted exactly how you want it copied onto the website for students to complete the module
